Howick Library reopening set for 2 November

The refurbished library opens later than first signalled, after hidden damage was found during building work.

Howick Library will reopen at 9am on Monday 2 November, more than eight months after it closed for repairs.

The library and the neighbouring Fencible Lounge closed on 16 February for a renewal the Howick Local Board estimated would cost about $2.64 million.

The work covers new exterior cladding, membrane roofing, some air conditioning units, refurbished ducting and repainting.

“Seven months without service is a long time,” Howick Local Board chair Bruce Kendall said when the closure was announced.

That timeline did not hold.

In an update on 3 August, Auckland Council said unforeseen risks had emerged as construction progressed and extra funding was being sought to manage them.

The council said it was common for deterioration and damage that had not been visible to be found once parts of a building were opened up for work.

The same update carried a revised version of Kendall’s comment, putting the wait at 10 months.

The temporary library service at Howick War Memorial Hall in Picton Street will close at 5.30pm on Friday 16 October.

That leaves Howick without any library service for just over two weeks before the reopening.

Howick Library said in a Facebook post on 28 September that customers could use the Botany, Flat Bush, Highland Park and Pakuranga libraries during the pause.

The council said in August the Fencible Lounge was also expected to reopen on 2 November.

The cost of the renewal has already pushed back other local projects, including new public toilets in Howick and improvements to the Lloyd Elsmore Park mountain bike trail, both now scheduled for the 2028/2029 financial year.

“We know these projects matter to our residents, and the board remains committed to them—we’ll return to them as soon as the library upgrade is complete,” Kendall said.
