Robbie had the rail vision first

I was a little put out by your story “Success has many fathers: CRL now open”. You saying Len Brown had the vision and foresight to press the city and nations leaders to back this project from 2010 to 2016. Yes I agree he worked hard at it. BUT the vision and foresight has to go to the late independent Mayor Robbie. The Mayor who got stopped by the Auckland Council controlled by Citizens and Ratepayers.

Pensioners have already paid

What a delight to receive a newspaper in the mailbox once again. We can only celebrate print returning. I read with interest Mr Williamson’s suggestion that we should all have to pay money to use the motorway. Doesn’t he think us pensioners have already paid our dues over the years? We already pay Mr Brown’s rates every year that they go up and up. Surely we should not have to pay again for roads we already have paid a lifetime for. Good luck Howick Post

Levy the AI

All previous attempts to tax giant multinational companies like Google have so far, ended in dismal failure. New Taxes are a “hard sell” at the moment, but levies seem to be more acceptable. Did you know that The Commerce Commission operates something called the Telecommunications Development Levy (TDL)? TDL is charged on the “bit stream” buzzing through the fiber optic cable into NZ. Currently this capped levy is only paid by the likes of Slingshot and Spark. Why not uncap the levy and change the definition of who pays to: “Revenue earned from any digital service delivered over New Zealand telecommunications infrastructure”? Remember it is a levy not a tax! We are talking hundreds of millions of dollars here.
