Masked robbery in Somerville leads to five charged

A masked group allegedly took the till at a Somerville bar before a pursuit ended in Favona.

Five people, four of them aged between 15 and 17, have been charged with aggravated robbery after an overnight raid on a Somerville karaoke bar.

Staff called Police at about 1.40am after a group wearing masks allegedly came in carrying weapons, which Police said were not firearms, and demanded cash.

Counties Manukau CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson said the group climbed over the counter and took the till and a number of other items.

“The offenders fled in a vehicle, which was abandoned on Windsong Court,” McPherson said.

“From there the offenders got in a stolen Nissan, which was sighted by officers shortly after the aggravated robbery.”

Windsong Court is a residential street in neighbouring Northpark.

McPherson said officers pursued the Nissan as it travelled through Otara, Manukau and Mangere.

“The vehicle was eventually abandoned in Favona with the occupants attempting to flee on foot, however all five were quickly located and taken into custody.”

“Thankfully, no one was injured – this was a great outcome, and we’re pleased to be putting this group before the court to be held accountable,” McPherson said.

“Employees and business owners deserve to go to work and not be confronted by this violent behaviour,” she said.

The four younger accused face charges of aggravated robbery, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

An 18-year-old man was due to appear in Manukau District Court on Monday 5 October charged with aggravated robbery, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.
