Fairytale trail and puppet show at Howick Historical Village Live Day

Howick Historical Village will hold its next themed Live Day on Sunday 9 August, with a folklore and fairytale theme running from 10am to 4pm.

The event, LIVE DAY | Folklore & Fairytales, is run by the Howick & Districts Historical Society at the village at 75 Bells Road, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

A fairytale trail winds through the historic buildings and heritage gardens, where costumed villagers bring the past to life.

There will also be a live puppet show of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Visitors can make an enchanted forest crown with tutors from Corban Estate Arts Centre.

Other hands-on activities include butter churning, beeswax candle making, and bookbinding with members of the Association of Book Crafts.

A Victorian school lesson will run twice, at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

The blacksmith will be working the forge, and woodworkers will be at the carpenter’s workshop.

Morris dancing is scheduled for 11am and noon, followed by a bagpipe band at 12.30pm.

Freshly baked goods will come hot from the coal range in Puhi Nui Homestead.

A sweet shop will sell old-fashioned lollies and fudge, and the Homestead Café will be open for brunch and lunch.

Admission at the venue is $18 for adults, $16 for students and seniors, and $10 for children.

A family pass is $46.

Entry is free for children under 5, for Howick Historical Village members and for annual pass holders.

Tickets are also sold through Eventfinda, where the online checkout adds a small booking fee on top of those prices, taking an adult ticket to $19.45.

Eventfinda lists the day as suitable for all ages.

Live Days are a regular fixture at the village, held roughly monthly and each given its own theme.

The most recent themed Live Day was for Matariki in July, and the village’s next event after this one is the Festival of Frights, a multi-night Halloween event running through October.

Outside Live Days, Howick Historical Village is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed Monday, with last admission at 3pm.
