A decade on, the Fo Guang Yuan gallery in Flat Bush is showing works by 108 artists
Howick Local Board member Adele White has been honoured for her involvement in the founding of an art salon that opened with 32 artists and now hangs more than 650 works.
White was given the Founding Vision and Distinguished Support Award at the opening of the 10th Art Salon at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery in Flat Bush on Saturday 15 August 2026.
Nearly 200 guests watched, and the gallery also handed out prizes to artists who have exhibited for six years or more.
The gallery’s curator, Abbess Manshin, said the salon grew out of a conversation with White in 2017, when White told her local artists needed somewhere to show their work.
The first exhibition opened later that year.
White said the Art Salon provided opportunities for both established and emerging artists, while also bringing members of the wider community to the temple.
She described the temple as a special place that people were naturally drawn to return to.
Howick Local Board member Damian Light was also there.
“This marked 10 years of this wonderful community event, which provides opportunities for local artists to display their works in a safe, welcoming space,” Light wrote on his blog two days later.
White chaired the Board through the 2019 to 2022 term and still holds a Howick subdivision seat.
More than 500 artists have shown at the salon over the decade, and it ran online in 2021 during the pandemic.
The gallery sits inside Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple at 16 Stancombe Road, which was the largest Buddhist temple in the country when it opened in October 2007.
The works on the walls are for sale.
This session has 108 artists and closes on 26 September.
A second session with a different set of works opens on 17 October.
