Howick Library will now reopen on 2 November 2026, after builders found more work was needed during its renewal.
The Howick Local Board says timber and brick cladding have to be replaced to keep the building safe, durable and fit for the future.
Further inspections found the remaining metal roof had reached the end of its useful life.
Rather than patch it, the Board decided to replace the whole roof for a longer-term result.
The new roof will also be able to carry solar panels in future, improving the building’s sustainability.
The renewal was approved by the Board at an estimated cost of $2,639,747 and began in February.
The original work included replacing exterior cladding, membrane roofing and some air conditioning, refurbishing ducting and repainting the building.
The pop-up library continues at the Howick War Memorial Hall on Picton Street.
