Baverstock Oaks School’s new principal has returned to where his New Zealand career began.
Ian Dickinson was formally welcomed to the Flat Bush school at the start of Term 3.
“It is an absolute privilege to have been appointed to the role of Tumuaki [Principal] at Baverstock Oaks School,” Dickinson said.
“My journey as an educator has truly come full circle.”
“I originally moved from the United Kingdom specifically to serve as a Whanau Leader here in 2007 during the school’s foundational years.”
Dickinson said he brought nine years of experience as a principal in New Zealand, and recent leadership at what he called a world-leading international school.
He holds a Master of Educational Leadership with Distinction from the University of Auckland.
“At the very heart of my educational philosophy is the child,” he said.
“I firmly believe that academic excellence stems from a nurturing, high-trust environment where every single student feels safe, valued, and inspired to learn.”
Dickinson said his approach was relational and visible, whether greeting students at the gate or celebrating the school’s 50 nationalities.
He was welcomed by the school’s kapa haka group and presented with a carved taonga.
Dickinson takes over from Genée Crowley, who has retired after 22 years leading the school and 45 years in education.
“It has been an absolute privilege to be part of this incredible school community,” Crowley told families when she announced her departure.
“To our students, thank you for the warmth you show, the smiles and greetings each day, and for the way you live our school values and try so hard with your learning.”
“You are the heart of this school.”
Baverstock Oaks is a state contributing school for Year 1 to 6 students on Baverstock Road in Flat Bush.
