The Eastern Basketball Association wants outdoor courts and a future community hub at the reserve
The Eastern Basketball Association has pitched a plan for two to three outdoor courts at Millhouse Reserve, with a future clubhouse and community hub.
“This isn’t just a court. It’s a home. It’s a future. It’s for everyone,” the association said in a deputation to the Howick Local Board.
The association said there was an “urgent need”, calling basketball the “fastest-growing sport locally, but no dedicated space”, and said overcrowding meant players were being “turned away”.
Millhouse Reserve sits between Botany, Pakuranga and Howick, and the courts are targeted for completion in 2026.
The proposal, costed at between $160,000 and $300,000, also includes upgraded lighting and fencing, better public facilities, and expanding the carpark from 71 spaces to more than 100.
The association said it was developing the project with Basketball New Zealand, Auckland Basketball Services and local schools and clubs.
The plan was presented to the Board on 28 May by the association’s Jeremy Grey. The Board thanked the association but made no funding decision, and the proposal now depends on whether it is picked up in a future work programme.
